English: Creative Writing Option, A.A.

The Creative Writing Option within the English Concentration introduces students to multiple genres of writing (e.g. poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and playwriting) and allows for students to build a writing portfolio that can then serve to appeal to transfer programs and employers. The capstone course of the English degree with the Creative Writing Option is ENG-234 Literary Publishing , an experiential learning course in which students gain professional experience as writers, editors, and publishers of BHCC’s literary journal. Creative writing backgrounds appeal to a range of employers who seek candidates who can write, creatively and flexibly, in a variety of genres for diverse audiences.

Upon Completion of This Concentration Graduates Will Be Able To:
Students graduating with an AA in English with the Creative Writing Option will be able to:
- Develop a creative writing portfolio in preparation for transfer to a four-year college or university.
- Collaboratively compose, edit, and publish a creative project.
- Demonstrate competence as a writer, composing for a variety of purposes, and in a variety of genres, adapting to various audiences.
- Demonstrate proficiency in critical thinking.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of a language other than English.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal communication skills.
Career Outlook
Graduates of English with the Creative Writing Option qualify to transfer to four-year institutions that prepare students for careers in writing, editing, teaching English or creative writing, content development, and publishing. These students would be well-equipped to apply for BFA programs in Creative Writing or BA programs in English. (Students must complete a bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate to pursue a teaching career.) A bachelor’s degree in English is a minimum requirement for entry level work in careers such as publishing, content development, and other creative fields. In order to advance in some fields, graduate work may be required. Students interested in eventually pursuing a MFA in Creative Writing would benefit from this Option.
