EMS-205 Principles of Paramedicine I


This course is the first of nine courses designed for Emergency Medical Technicians, Basic or Advanced, with at least one year of experience desiring to obtain Paramedic Certification/Licensure. Areas of study will include, Introduction to Advanced Pre-hospital Care, Well Being of the Paramedic, EMS Systems, Roles and Responsibilities, Illness and Injury Prevention, Stress Management, Anatomy & Physiology, Documentation, Communications, Therapeutic Communications, Medical/Legal Aspects and Ethical Considerations, Basic and Advanced Airway Management & Ventilation, Wave Form Caponography, Patient Assessment, Trauma & Medical Physical Exam Techniques, Obstetric & Gynecological Emergencies, Pathophysiology of Shock and Intravenous Access and Mathematics for Medications. Students will demonstrate knowledge and perform manipulative skills under the supervision of the course instructor, program director, medical director, and/or skilled preceptor. The student must demonstrate and maintain current licensure/certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Adherence to the attendance policy and a minimum final course grade of B- must be achieved in order to advance in the program.
