COM-254 Digital Media & Performance

This course uses digital media and live performance as tools for storytelling and creative expression. This course first grounds students in a foundation of media theory and studies, developing their vocabulary to discuss media power, systems, culture, and representation. Students are exposed to performance studies from a communication perspective and use media theory to construct digital and transformative stories. Students engage performance text and media from diverse content producers. Human rights and racial justice will be considered, as students use media as a device to create storytelling in (auto)ethnography, marketing, advertising and/or public relations. Students will find opportunities to use multiple media to create their performances, such as video, image, spoken word, social media, writing, and music. Classes include basic level hands-on instruction in image, audio, and introduce video production/editing techniques in a project-based, collaborative learning environment. This course culminates in a performance project.
