Early Childhood Development Certificate
|

The Early Childhood Development Certificate program at Bunker Hill Community College prepares students who are entering the field of early childhood education to learn the knowledge and develop the skills to work with infant, toddler, and preschool aged children in group care settings and with individual families. Developmentally appropriate practice (DAP) is central to the program with an emphasis on inclusion, equity, and collaboration. Final determination of teaching credentials is made by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care.

Semester 1 Advising Note -
ECE-103 is required to be certified by Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (DEEC). -
No other developmental Psychology courses may be substituted for ECE-103 . Only ECE-103 is allowed for this degree plan and others will not be counted toward qualifications for certification by Massachusetts DEEC. Total Credits: 10
Semester 2 Advising Note -
Students who wish to work with infants (0-18 months) and/or toddlers (18-33 months) need to choose ECE-108 and students who wish to work with preschool age children (3-5 years) need to choose ECE-104 . -
ECE-101 and ECE-104 are co/prerequisites for ECE-119 . -
ECE-119 should be taken in the final semester of the program. -
A C or better is required in all courses to progress in the program. - Apply for graduation
Upon Completion of This Concentration Graduates Will Be Able To:
- Explain and demonstrate an understanding of how cultural, economic, political, and historical factors influence theories of child development.
- Use knowledge of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development to practice assessment of children from birth to age 8.
- Explain the main theories, models, job roles, and responsibilities in early childhood education for creating safe and inclusive learning environments.
- Follows ethical, legal, and practical considerations for supporting children with diverse needs and backgrounds in an unbiased way.
- Implement developmentally appropriate curriculum plans that align with ECE guidelines and support child development across domains.
- Demonstrate the ability to use positive and supportive interactions with children, families, and colleagues.
Career Outlook
Graduates of this program will be qualified to enter the field of early childhood education, with the knowledge and skills to work with infant, toddler, or preschool aged children in group care settings and with individual families. As a prerequisite for a field placement in the Early Childhood Development Certificate Program, all students must undergo a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check. These background checks are required due to potential unsupervised contact with children. Those with concerns about this requirement should see the College’s CORI officer at 617-228-2193 before beginning the program. The College is authorized by the Commonwealth’s Department of Criminal Justice Information Services, pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 6, Sections 167-178 B, to access CORI records. Additional background checks may be required by field experience site. |
