SOC-225 Sociology of Homosexuality This survey course examines issues dealing with homosexuality from the perspective of the sociologist. The course emphasizes the essentialist/constructionist debate; facts and myths about homosexuality; the influence of prejudice and discrimination on the lives of gay men, lesbians and their families; and the homosexual culture/community/lifestyle. Other topics include coming out issues, development of gay and lesbian identities, the needs of a gay family member, gay history, gay spirituality, the AIDS crisis, and the gay liberation movement and its impact on contemporary culture.
