Through classroom teaching, lab observation and practice, and clinical experience, this full-time, Associate Degree program prepares students to work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel to deliver patient care in the operating room. The program prepares students to handle the instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure; to understand the procedures being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgeon; to have the necessary knowledge and ability to provide quality patient care during the operative procedure and to maintain sterile technique Students will have three semesters of clinical experience starting the third semester of the program.

Admission Requirements Advising Note Students must maintain a grade of B- or better in all surgical technology courses. Applicants to this program are required to undergo a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check and a Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) check. The outcome of the CORI check may impact the student’s ability to participate in the clinical experience. For further information, see the Department chair. Students must apply to the program through BHCC’s Admissions Office and: - Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.
- Attend an information session.
- Complete Human Biology and Lab (BIO-108).
- Complete Foundations of Algebra (MAT-097) or exemption by placing into higher level course.
After completion of the admission requirements, qualified applicants will be evaluated using an admissions rubric. Total Credits: 18

Semester 4 Advising Note Upon Completion of This Concentration Graduates Will Be Able To:
- Applies basic anatomy, physiology, and microbiology to the operative patient.
- Applies the principles of aseptic technique and the technologist’s responsibility in carrying out strict aseptic technique in a clinical setting.
- Prepares supplies and equipment to be used in the OR and uses them appropriately.
- Applies the different types of sterilization and knows when to use each appropriately.
- Functions actively as a contributing member of a health care team by completing the specific responsibilities of the surgical technologist in OR routine procedures.
- Learns and practices patient safety.
- Develops a professional working relationship with the OR team.
- Understands and applies legal implications concerning the patient and personnel in the OR.
- Adapts his or her knowledge and skills to the care of the intraoperative patient.
- Is eligible to sit for the national certification examination offered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
Career Outlook
Graduates of this program qualify for surgical technologist positions in hospitals. The prospect for jobs is very good at the present time as the cost of health care rises. Graduates of the program qualify to take the national certification exam. Criminal Offender Record Information and Sex Offender Registry Information Checks
As a prerequisite for a clinical placement in the Surgical Technology Certificate Program, all students must undergo a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check and a Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) check. These checks are required due to potential unsupervised contact with children, the disabled, or the elderly during a clinical experience. Students found to have certain criminal convictions or pending criminal actions will be presumed ineligible for clinical placement. The College is authorized by the Commonwealth’s Department of Criminal Justice Information Services, pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 6, Sections 167-178B, to access CORI records. Sex Offender checks shall be performed pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 6, and Sections 178C-178P.
