Communication Concentration, A.A.


The Communication Major at Bunker Hill Community College is a great first step for students interested in communication-related careers. The Associate in Arts Degree in Communication offers foundational training in communication and prepares students to transfer to four-year colleges, as well as pursue careers in a wide variety of fields. The program offers courses in the dynamic processes of human communication, media, journalism, and more. Communication students will learn to effectively, ethically, and inclusively express themselves through writing, speaking, and digital media. Students will also develop their critical thinking, analytic, and technical skills.

Semester 1


Total Credits: 15-16


Semester 1 Advising Note

  • Semester 1 is typically the Fall Semester.
  • New degree-seeking students enrolled in 9 credits or more must take a Learning Community Seminar or a Learning Community Cluster within their first year. Communication majors should take COM-110  to fulfill this requirement.
  • Students, please consult with a Communication faculty member before registering.
  • Students intending to use Mass Transfer are recommended to take quantitative math (MAT-174 Quantitative Reasoning )
  • COM-101  and COM-171  are program requirements and thus cannot be used to satisfy the General Education Creative Work requirement.

Semester 2

  • Semester 2 is typically the Spring Semester.
  • Students, please consult with a Communication faculty member before registering.
  • General Education Elective requirement must be satisfied with a General Education course from the Community and Cultural Contexts Area.

Semester 3

Semester 3 Advising Note

  • Students who are interested in journalism and media writing are encouraged to take COM-241 COM-242  and ENG-234 .
  • Students who are interested film studies and video production are encouraged to take COM-102  and VMA-262  OR VMA-263 .
  • Students interested in applied communication are encouraged to take COM-172  and COM-272 .
  • Please note: COM-102  may satisfy either one concentration elective requirement or the General Education Creative Work requirement, but not both.
  • Semester 3 is typically the Fall Semester.

Semester 4


Total Credits: 16


Semester 4 Advising Note

  • Students who are interested in journalism and media writing are encouraged to take COM-241 COM-242  and ENG-234 .
  • Students who are interested film studies and video production are encouraged to take COM-102 and VMA-262  OR VMA-263 .
  • Students interested in applied communication are encouraged to take COM-172  and COM-272 .
  • Please note: COM-102  may satisfy either one concentration elective requirement or the General Education Creative Work requirement, but not both.
  • Semester 4 is typically the Spring Semester.
  • Students should consult faculty and ICD to help with the internship search process before they register for COM-299 . Please reach out to the department chair with questions about this requirement.
  • Apply for graduation.
