Certified Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician Certificate

This program prepares students to deliver direct patient care through classroom teaching, lab practice, and actual clinical experience in hospitals and long-term care facilities. The program prepares students for a variety of positions in the health care field.
Graduates of this program qualify for employment in hospitals, clinics, chronic care facilities, and the home environment as multiskilled workers, patient care technicians, patient care associates, medical aides, certified nursing assistants and home health aides. Graduates are eligible to sit for certification exams for state Nurse Aide and Home Health Aide.

Admission Requirements


  • Diploma Proof of High School Diploma, GED, and or HISET
    •  A copy of a high school diploma or an official GED/HiSet certificate may be submitted in person with a photo ID or may be sent via email directly from a school official
    • International high school diplomas and transcripts not in English must be translated into English and evaluated
  • Session Mandatory Allied Health information session
  • Every student in the Patient Care Technician program must possess the physical, mental, and emotional capabilities required to successfully complete the program and gain employment in the field.
  • An active Social Security Number (SSN) is mandatory to participate in the clinicals for the CNA/PCT program. Please be aware that an SSN is also a strict requirement for maintaining a CNA license in the state of Massachusetts. Without a SSN, students will not be eligible to complete clinical placements or be eligible to sit for the certification exam. 

Semester 1


  • Credits: 6
  • This is a day course taken in person on the Chelsea Campus. This is a 7-week course 100% attendance is mandatory in accordance with the Department of Public Health regulation for taking the state certification exam. Must achieve a B- or higher.

  • Credits: 3
  • Must be taken before or during this semester.

Upon Completion of This Concentration Graduates Will Be Able To:


  • Understand and apply the “core concepts” that are common to healthcare occupations i.e. patient-centered care, working in interdisciplinary teams, and integrating the best clinical expertise and patient values to provide optimal care. This also involves continuous learning.
  • Think like a healthcare professional. Demonstrating a commitment to ethical principles and professional responsibilities, including accountability and integrity.
  • The healthcare professional must be able to apply theory rather than memorize facts.
  • Describe how to base care on the needs of the individual patient by focusing on the many factors and life experiences that may influence the patient’s perceptions and needs.
  • Demonstrate skills such as activities of daily living and vital sign monitoring for patients.
  • Know common pharmacology medications and their effects on the human body.
  • Explain how to apply the concepts of healthful living to one’s own life by taking responsibility for actions and behaviors.
     

Career Outlook


Graduates of this program qualify for employment in hospitals, clinics, chronic care facilities, and the home environment as multiskilled workers, patient care technicians, patient care associates, medical aides, certified nursing assistants and home health aides. Graduates are eligible to sit for certification exams for state Nurse Aide and Home Health Aide.  Graduates receive a certificate of completion from Bunker Hill Community College, CPR certification, DPH State of Massachusetts Nurse Aide and Home Health Aide certification.

Criminal Offender Record Information and Sex Offender Registry Information Checks


The college requires Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) and Sexual Offender Record Information (SORI)checks prior to participation in the clinical component of Allied Health courses in accordance with the Criminal Records Information Act. Mass. General Laws, Chapter 6& 172-178 and regulations pursuant to these statutes. Admission to an Allied Health program does not guarantee clinical placement. The outcome of the CORI/SORI may impact the student’s ability to participate in the clinical experience.
