COM-212 Intercultural Communication

This course provides an overview of the relationship between communication and culture. Students will analyze how cultural identities, values, norms, and language shape communication styles and practices across a variety of contexts. In doing so, students will interrogate the mechanisms of power and oppression associated with social categories such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, gender, ability, and religion. The course will also offer students strategies for resolving intercultural conflict and miscommunication. In particular, students will develop awareness of their own cultural assumptions and biases, thereby enhancing their own intercultural competence and preparing themselves to be strong intercultural communicators across a global landscape. This course meets the General Education requirement for Community and Cultural Context.
